Restaurants in Los Angeles – Reviews of Places to Eat

A Running List of Places to Eat in Los Angeles
Lately I haven’t been able to write my restaurant reviews as frequently as I eat out.  So many of the places I haven’t reviewed in the past are really worth mentioning on my blog.   Some may be even better than restaurants in Los Angeles I’ve reviewed at greater length.

So here you will find a running list of places where you can eat and drink in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area.  These reviews will not be comprehensive, but rather summaries to share my experiences to help you find new places to try.

Tlayuda LA – Family Latin American Restaurant

Tlayuda LA – Family Latin American Restaurant

Why You Should Visit Tlayuda LA
A few weeks ago my son and I enjoyed a yummy Oaxacan supper at Tlayuda L.A. in East Hollywood (Los Angeles).   Recently I returned there for lunch with my brother.  He’s an aficionado of Latino cuisine and had never been to Tlayuda LA.  He was excited to discover it.

Tlayuda LA enjoys one of the best ratings for Mexican food in our area.  More precisely Tlayuda LA’s cuisine is primarily Oaxacan, thus automatically making it also Mexican and Latin American.  You will therefore find Tlayuda LA under listings for all three cuisines.

Tlayuda LA Restaurant
  • Location
  • Atmosphere

Summary

Tlayuda LA in East Hollywood offers reasonably-priced tasty home-style Oaxacan food served with a smile in a cheerful atmosphere. The two sisters who run Tlayuda LA welcome customers with a smile and a friendly greeting. If you try this restaurant, you will surely return often.

Soom Soom – Tasty Fresh Mediterranean Food

Soom Soom – Tasty Fresh Mediterranean Food

Why is Soom Soom one of my New Favorite Restaurants in Los Angeles?

Kismet led me to Soom Soom
A few weeks ago my son and I dined at Kismet, a new Middle Eastern / Mediterranean restaurant in Los Feliz that received raving reviews in Los Angeles Magazine.

Kismet did not live up to my expectations.  Like many trendy restaurants for the moment, Kismet offers small plates intended to be shared.  The food was tasty and presented in an attractive way. Yet, nothing wowed me, except their tahini sauce.

My son and I enjoyed our meal, even if we were somewhat disappointed.  The prices, …

Community – Los Feliz Restaurant

Community – Los Feliz Restaurant

Community’s Promise
The past couple months I’ve enjoyed spending time on Hillhurst Avenue.  It’s a low-key neighborhood-type street with a fair amount of eating choices, particularly during the day.  Click to read more about Hillhurst Avenue.

One day while walking down Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz (Los Angeles), I was mesmerized by Community’s atmosphere and promise.  For several reasons I wanted to try this restaurant and perhaps even become a frequent customer.

Community
  • Location
  • Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Price/Quality Ratio

Summary

Community left many promises unfulfilled. Its location on Hillhurst Avenue is very good for a neighborhood lunch place. Community has a warm, cozy and welcoming atmosphere. My Community Noodle dish, however, tasted like boiled cabbage and onions. The service was satisfactory. I did not feel that my dish was worth the high price charged for a soup featuring such inexpensive ingredients. I would not recommend going here unless you wanted to try one of its signature dishes. There are many other options on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz.

Stamp Proper Foods – Los Feliz cafe

Stamp Proper Foods – Los Feliz cafe

What I look for in a Cafe
As a recent relocatee to Los Angeles, I am enjoying exploring different neighborhoods and eating establishments.  It’s even more fun since writing restaurant reviews and identifying new food ideas is part of my living now.

I’ve been seeking new places where I can eat, drink and work with my laptop so I get out of my home more during the day.  In addition, it’s important to me that the staff and the place’s vibe are welcoming.  I want to feel comfortable setting up my laptop to work a few hours.  Of course, I expect to drink and eat in while working to justify taki…

Kettle Glazed Doughnuts – Hollywood

Kettle Glazed Doughnuts – Hollywood

Are Kettle Glazed Doughnuts really Great?

Neighborhood Doughnuts
The past few months I have enjoyed discovering my new neighborhood: Hollywood, California.  Although I grew up in Los Angeles, I have not lived here since high school several years ago.

Part of moving to a new city is finding new favorite places to eat, shop, drink coffee, and take walks.  My brother has recommended many places, while I’ve found others on my own.  It’s helpful receiving his suggestions, yet it’s fun to find places that I can call mine.  I’m still exploring my new surroundings and loving the adventure…

Restaurants in Los Angeles Enjoyed

Restaurants in Los Angeles Enjoyed

What Restaurants in Los Angeles did I Enjoy over New Year’s Holiday?
In the past few years, Los Angeles has become one of the best cities in the United States for enjoying food.  Mexican, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Persian (Iranian), Armenian, Jewish and Californian cuisines are only a few to highlight here.  Of course, traditional Italian and French cuisines can also be found all over the city.

A vibrant food truck culture also permeates the city streets, especially in certain neighborhoods.  These food trucks have been on the front lines of innovation, fusing tastes from different …

Family celebration at Matteo’s

Family celebration at Matteo’s

Why Matteo’s is a family favorite?
For my dad’s 85th birthday celebration with close family he chose a private dining room at Matteo’s in Westwood (Los Angeles). Matteo’s has been a family favorite for about 40 years. Before us Matteo’s was a favorite hangout for Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack group.

Matteo's
  • Location
  • Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Price/Quality Ratio

Summary

Matteo's has a comfortable atmosphere, wonderful service, and delicious food. Matteo's is a West Los Angeles institution with lots of hints of the Hollywood A-listers, like the Rat Pack, who used to dine there. You will be extremely satisfied dining at Matteo's!

Cocktails
The celebration started in the bar area where we each chose a drink. Many of us had one (or 2 or 3) Moscow Mules: a delicious mix of ginger beer (which is actually not beer at all but rather a ginger syrup), vodka and lime. Moscow Mules are simply too easy to …

Ocean Prime: Beverly Hills

Ocean Prime: Beverly Hills

Is Ocean Prime worth the cost?
A place to celebrate special occasions
On my father’s 85th birthday evening, we choseOcean Prime, a restaurant where none of us had been in Beverly Hills . My mother had just heard about it from a friend who raved about their beautiful bar area. We thought we’d try it and booked a reservation.

Ocean Prime Beverly Hills is part of a national chain of restaurants, which is expanding further its reach in California later this year.

The space for the restaurant, bar and terrace is quite large, yet welcoming. When we arrived at the reception desk I felt as if …

Brent’s Deli: No Choices for Vegans

Brent’s Deli: No Choices for Vegans

Is Brent’s Deli any Different on the Vegan Front?

In yesterday’s post “Scrambled Tofu Eggs”, I reviewed the vegan menu choices at two delis in Los Angeles (Lenny’s Deli and Factor’s Famous Deli). At the same time I also surveyed their rugelach offering for a post soon to be written.

Today my brothers and I took my dad out for his 85th birthday lunch. He picked the place: Brent’s Deli in Northridge (Los Angeles), California. It was my first time at Brent’s Deli, which many consider to be the best deli in Los Angeles, so I was excited.

Brent's Deli
  • Location
  • Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Price/Quality Ratio

Summary

Brent's Deli is one of the kings of LA delicatessens. Brent's has a gigantic menu with almost everything on it, except vegan choices. The atmosphere needs to be considered in the context of Jewish delis, which are not known for their elegant atmosphere. Booths and tables are spread out to fit in as many people as possible. Servers bustle around taking excellent care of their customers. Brent's is also available for take-out, but don't go there if you are looking for Jewish baked goods like rugelach, babkas, and other freshly made goodies.

Scrambled Tofu “Eggs”

Scrambled Tofu “Eggs”

Is Scrambled Tofu an Easy solution for Vegans for Breakfast?

In my post earlier today Eating Vegan Not Always Easy I was lamenting the difficulty of finding a good vegan breakfast in restaurants in Los Angeles. Today my family and I went to Lenny’s Deli for brunch on the Westside of Los Angeles. I had asked to go there instead of Factor’s Famous Deli where we went last Sunday because I find they have more variety on their menu.

Lenny’s Deli does have more choice on their menu. I could see able about 4 vegan items whereas at Factor’s I could only see 1 or 2. Both however had the sam…

Kreation Juice Kafe in Venice Beach

Kreation Juice Kafe in Venice Beach

What is all the hype about Kreation Juice Kafe in Venice Beach (Los Angeles)?
Walking around Santa Monica and Venice Beach in Los Angeles County always takes me down memory lane to summer (and school) days with friends. (I won’t mention how many years ago this was.)

A childhood friend and I hung out together in the late afternoon and evening. We strolled along 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, which is always a fun place to watch people. Third Street Promenade has definitely changed from the time I used to come there as a child with my grandmother. Now shops, restaurants, street entert…

Pirozhki in LA

Pirozhki in LA

Where can you find a healthier version of pirozhki in LA?
Today I was roaming around Westwood Village in Los Angeles, my old stomping grounds as a teenager. I was suddenly drawn to a silver shining Airstream trailer featuring Pirozhki, aptly named “Pirozhkila”! A young pretty woman named Sasha was offering samples of their food. Of course, being the foodie that I am, I accepted the offer and tasted their pirozhki. We started talking and then the owner Igor came out to join us.

In 15 minutes I discovered that Igor is originally from Kiev, Ukraine and comes to Los Angeles via Milano, Italy, …
