Bij den Boer Restaurant- Brussels

What makes Bij den Boer one of my favorite restaurants in Brussels?

Bij den Boer
  • Location
  • Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Price / Quality Ratio

Summary

Bij den Boer's fixed-price menu offers the all-around best value in Brussels. The food, atmosphere and service are all reliably quite good.

4.3

Bij den Boer, located at Quai aux Briques 60 across from the Sainte Catherine metro station, has been one of my favorite restaurants in Brussels for years. Bij den Boer offers the best price/quality ratio of any restaurant I know.  This restaurant has a bustling brasserie atmosphere with a hint of nostalgia.

Everything about Bij den Boer is authentic and good quality.  Their menu offers mainly fish and seafood, yet also has several meat options.  The best deal is Bij den Boer’s fixed-price menu featuring fou…

How to Work Up an Appetite near the Belgian Coast?
At the end of October 2015 a friend and I went to the Belgian seaside on the North Sea for the day.  We had gone to Bruges, Ghent and Hasselt together over the summer to visit the towns.  Now we were heading to Ostend.  We planned to visit the James Ensor House, a city museum created in the last house of the renown expressionist – surrealist painter.

A stop at Saint Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren
As the day approached we added more details to our plan.  In the end we agreed to visit the Saint Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren, Belgium, t…

What makes Sunday family meals so simple yet so special?
After rushing around all week, Sunday rolls around and lets us slow down to enjoy our families and friends.  A meal together, a stroll in the park, or whatever else your family does to reconnect together.

Sunday brunch in Los Angeles
While growing up in Los Angeles, Sunday brunch was my family’s main event.  We often enjoyed bagels, lox, and cream cheese along with whitefish, creamed herring and dill pickles. At one time my father made his famous scrambled eggs with everything in it (dried salami, onions,…

What makes Coconut Cream Pudding such an Ideal Yummy Dessert?

The Joys of a No-Fuss Dessert
After preparing a fairly elaborate main course for lunch guests, sometimes I do not want to put a lot of effort in making a dessert.  This is especially true for a casual family Sunday lunch.  Sunday mornings are intended for sleeping a bit late and languishing in bed before summoning all my will power to get out of bed.  Late Sunday mornings (when I’ve finally gotte…

Quick Puff Pastry Dough

How do you make a Quick Puff Pastry Dough?
What do you do when you want to make Puff Pastry Dough (pâte feuilletée) but don’t want to go through all the effort?  Puff Pastry Dough is ideal for appetizers, quiches, and light desserts.   It’s even on its own with a little flavored sugar drizzled on top.  This is how I use up all the leftover bits of dough.

To make a genuine Puff Pastry Dough, knead some cold butter into rectangular slabs of dough.  Fold the slabs over themselves several times.  It’s not terribly difficult but does take a certain amount of patience and rep…

Lufthansa – Disappointing Service

Lufthansa – Disappointing Service

What Makes Lufthansa’s Service so Disappointing?
Last November I booked a ticket on Lufthansa’s website to travel round-trip between Brussels and Los Angeles.   Immediately after booking my ticket I regretted having chosen Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners for this trip.  For what should have been a simple care-free trans-Atlantic trip to visit family over the winter holidays, I’ve had to try to deal with the customer service departments of Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Miles & More at every stage of my journey and even afterwards.

Lufthansa Review
  • Website (User-friendly, informative, transparent, and clear)
  • Customer Service
  • Comfort in Economy
  • Price / Quality Ratio
  • Food on board
  • Entertainment on board
  • Check-in procedures
  • Quality of Star Alliance Partnership

Summary

Lufthansa's Customer Service before, during and after travel is extremely disappointing, especially given its place on the market. Lufthansa clearly does not value its customers flying in Economy.

Pumpkin Bread Tried, Tested and Tasty!

Pumpkin Bread Tried, Tested and Tasty!

What recipe makes my Pumpkin Bread a Fall Favorite?

My Faithful Pumpkin Bread Recipe
By now you know that I love pumpkin.  Making food with pumpkin is how I connect best with the season of autumn.   Every year tradition calls me to make pumpkin bread at least once.  My kids love it and are always asking me to make it.

I’ve been using the same faithful recipe for almost 30 years. Of course, I’ve tried other recipes, such as one calling for cream cheese to give the pumpkin bread more of a cheesecake finish. Another recipe suggested chopping up and dropping in som…

Restaurants in Los Angeles Enjoyed Over the Holidays

Restaurants in Los Angeles Enjoyed Over the Holidays

What Restaurants in Los Angeles did I Enjoy over New Year’s Holiday?
In the past few years, Los Angeles has become one of the best cities in the United States for enjoying food.  Mexican, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Persian (Iranian), Armenian, Jewish and Californian cuisines are only a few to highlight here.  Of course, traditional Italian and French cuisines can also be found all over the city.

A vibrant food truck culture also permeates the city streets, especially in certain neighborhoods.  These food trucks have been on the front lines of innovation, fusing tastes from different …

Tomato Tarte Tatin is Simply Elegant

What is a Tarte Tatin?
You have probably heard of Apple Tarte Tatin (tarte tatin aux pommes), the French version of hot apple pie.  Slices of apple caramelized in a pan on the stove or in the oven before placing puff pastry dough on top and baking it further.  Before serving the pan is turned over so the pastry is on the bottom and the hot caramelized fruit on top.

Although tarte tatin is often made with fruit, a savory version made with vegetables can be just as delicious.  A few months ago I shared on this site my recipe f…

4 Vegan Tomato Soups to Sustain you through Winter
During the winter I enjoy a hearty soup that will nourish me, warm me up and keep me satisfied for hours.  Something about adding tomatoes to a soup gives it an extra earthy flavor.  It’s also a wonderful way to add a shot of vitamins and fiber to your diet.

I love making soups all year round with fresh and canned tomatoes and other vegetables, grains and beans.  In general, soups are inexpensive to make, take little time to prepare and remain available for serving over a couple days.

Here are 4 Vegan Tomato Soups from among the recipes…

What are chicons au gratin?

Chicons au gratin is a Belgian national dish consisting of braised Belgian endives  (aka chicons) wrapped in slices of baked ham and covered with a Mornay sauce and some grated cheese.  Steaming hot with a creamy cheesy sauce, chicons au gratin is comfort food par excellence.  The bitter Belgian endives mixed with the sweet baked ham also make a winning combination.  Chicons au gratin is probably my daughter’s all-time favorite dish.

Mornay Sauce

Mornay Sauce

What is a Mornay Sauce?
A Mornay sauce is essentially a bechamel sauce with a combination of cheese melted in.  Some know the bechamel sauce by its less elegant name of white sauce.  Bechamel sauce definitely sounds better, even if it’s basically only milk, flour and butter with a little salt, pepper and nutmeg.  That’s it!

Traditionalists add an egg yolk to give it more creamy consistency (and reduce the amount of flour used). Yet I don’t think it’s necessary.  I also often use olive oil instead of butter to improve its health benefits and make it …

Pumpkin is one of my favorite vegetables.  Pumpkin symbolizes the autumn and its holidays (Halloween and Thanksgiving) like no other vegetable or fruit.  I enjoy using pumpkin in savory dishes as opposed to sweet dishes.  However, anyone tasting my Speculoos Pumpkin Pie to Die For will agree that this dessert will tease your taste buds while satisfying your soul, without all the calories or fat custmarily found in pump…
